I took this with Josh in mind. See, I regularly sneak into churches, play piano, and write songs. And I regularly get in trouble, but I keep doing it. Well, Josh happened upon me one day. He liked to listen and so, he listened every single week. Just sat in a back pew and listened. I told him I was going to get him a "band T-shirt"...and we laughed a lot. But last week, I went to play, and he wasn't there because he had passed away the day before. I played some songs for him anyhow, and I'm sure he heard them. Anyway...be kind and ask questions. Pay attention. Look at those around you. Notice. Because we only have this moment.

Missing Windows

I have a series of vehicle photos. I'm rather in tune with them, because I worked in dealerships all growing up, from the time I was 15 through 23 and then some, on and off in later years. I've worked with Pontiac, Subaru, Hyundai, Toyota, Audi, Honda, Cadillac, limousines, vans, sedans, and buses, ha. I do like cars. I've owned an Oldsmobile, a Mitsubishi, a Chevrolet, a Ford, a Scion, and a Toyota, if I remember correctly. They've all had names. Right now, I drive Charlie, the Toyota. I take good care of him, but every day is questionable, as he has mega miles. One thing at a time...that's how I have to think about my car and life right now; it's all been forcing me to stay in the moment, for sure.

Air 3.

I have a series of plane and sky shots. This is one of my favorite ones. Hope you had a beautiful day. Lately, I've noticed I'm becoming more outgoing, especially on the job. I'm actually an extreme introvert by nature, but I enjoy performing, teaching riding and such, being in front of a crowd. And working is sort of like a performance sometimes, really. Why not? They say.... Act as if...sometimes it really helps. When I think of it like that, it's rather fun.

There are hilarious characters all over grocery stores and no matter what store, each section tends to have a mood...the meat guys are always hilarious, quick, sarcastic jokesters. Hanging with the meat guys is like a constant standup routine; I love it. The produce guys are rather quiet and yet, they'll shoot out hilarious, one-liner deep thoughts every now and again and when they do, they're golden and can't be matched. Unlike the meat guys, who keep going and going, the produce guys can deliver a line that'll silence everyone. The deli people are always stressed and straight up. The bakery...they keep to themselves, but they're all rather content. And dairy, that's a whole other planet altogether -- those guys are off the charts, always; there is no figuring them out, so don't try. I love it, because you never know what to expect. One day, jokes. Next day, silent. Still another day, quick jabs. And another day, they'll be heartfelt and warm. One person's quiet. The other's loud. Somebody's always hyper-stocking. Can't ever pin dairy down. There's no category for it. Dairy and meat are my favorites. Because of the elusive nature of dairy...and my good friend who was the manager at one time...that sparked my fourth book, THE HOLE. Of course, the book went on a whole other journey altogether, but my friend got a kick out of helping me with details about dairy, and I still look for him every day, but he passed away a few years ago. In THE HOLE, you'll also see the influence of the meat guys in the dialogue between my character, Lucas, and his coworker...my interactions with the meat guys bled into the book, and it's rather ingenious and hilarious. You'll see.

Check out THE HOLE...it's intense, spooky, smart, and thrilling, as well as funny at times. I loved writing it. One thing that's good about my OCD...I can shuffle away quotes and character voices like no one else; my brain files them away, and they come out flying when I'm writing books. I see it as a gift now. :)

Hi Girl.

Oftentimes, in the morning, I'll hear an internal critic, and it also sets fear rolling. It's a harsh voice, one that doesn't help. I know where it comes from and man, it's hard to not hear it. See, I'm already a hard worker and "over-doer." There's been so much going on in the past couple of years and when I think back, it's amazing I'm here, rolling along, writing to you. And I realize that others may have just as much happening, even if they don't show it on the outside. I am learning to let go of that harsh voice, because it's mean and unnecessary. In reality, I am working my ass off in every way, and I always have.

What I need are those around me who are loving, caring, and helpful...and I'm reminding myself to be that way as well. Learning. I have a little morning prayer I use:  "OK God, let's be kind to people, be helpful, have fun, and be safe." I've added, "I'm just going to do the best I can." It's helping me relax and be gentler with myself.

Because when it comes down to it, at this point in my life, what do I want to do? I want to be peaceful so that I can create, give back gently, relax, have fun, and enjoy the moments, the sunrises and sunsets. Love, care, support -- inward and outward. In terms of material things, I don't need much, and I don't have much, but there is a lot of fear there that I'm muddling through, writing about, sharing, feeling, and trying to let go one moment at a time, learning to trust.

I've been "dialing it down" and working with one moment at a time, because there's a lot of learning going on underneath the surface, and it's exhausting. I can't handle much more than the moment.

Right here, right now.

Just sending out some sweetness. "Feeling the feels," as they say, which sometimes isn't much fun, but I feel the "X" love right now, looking at this. And the fun always comes back. This week has been tough workwise too...sometimes it all hits at once, but if you're going through it out there...remember...it always changes. Reminding myself as well! And I don't know about you, but I believe the feelings are just there to keep pushing me back to that which is divine. Hard to understand sometimes in the moment, of course, but it feels that as a human being, this pattern seems to happen for me. I was grieving today, and I looked up, and a hawk was right there in the tree, watching over me. And today, I helped some people. That makes for a winning day, in my book. XO. Love to you, C.A. A Toddler and a Dog.

Not a formal essay. I'm sure I'll turn this into one, but for now...just some thoughts I'm passing on. Who knows? Perhaps it'll help someone.

Good morning, just sending some love your way. I'm learning and growing, and it's painful, but it's unique to me right now, just as life is unique for everyone. Just stating the truth. Strangely, I'm also proud of where I am right now. It's teaching me to seek out the correct person/persons who will allow me to feel and offer an ear and gentleness, rather than harshness or directions, because that's what I need during this time of healing. In truth, the answers come from within. More often than not, it's all teaching me to simply sit with things in quiet and figure it all out on my own.

It's teaching me to trust myself and stay in the moment, for sure!

And simply put, I'm learning how to better love myself and others. I suppose we are all on this journey, going about it in different ways. Some are trapped in various stages. Some are pushing forward. Some never touch the surface. And still others are fully open and alive, back to the place where we were as children -- breathing, laughing, playing, loving. Randomness, but is it random? Or is it just as it should be? I don't know the answer to that question, but I do feel comfort in the old saying, "Everything is as it should be." There is a great deal of acceptance in that statement, and it makes me feel as if someone's giving me a hug, which is something that I need right now.

Seems like the entire world needs a hug right now. And maybe, just maybe, today I can offer that to someone who needs it. Yesterday, on a delivery, when I was in a stranger's driveway, I looked up and spied a toddler and dog watching me from the window. Both of them were smiling, excited to see me, and it filled my heart...the gentle excitement present within the scene. I just kept waving, and they continued watching and smiling. The dog never barked; he just wagged his tail ferociously, and I felt so welcome there. It was a touching little scene, and it warmed my heart -- the innocence, expectation, and curiosity within the two of them. I felt like I belonged with them, and the moment was golden. (Ha, I just thought of Pony Boy in The Outsiders when I wrote that. Making such connections is a blessing in my writing, and it's a real gift when it comes to my books, but it can be a curse when it comes to life sometimes, ha!)

Not everyone believes in God per say, but I do. I use that word, and it represents many things -- the people close to me, the feeling in a still room, the hawks, the wolves, nature all around, and the shadows, surprises, and sparks. And then some. In paintings, stained glass windows, photos, songs, and books. All around. For me, it's present in a piece of everything. Oftentimes, I feel it in the trees, the sky, and inside people's eyes.

I hope you have a beautiful day. To me, you're a piece of God. And I am too. Staying gold. Ha. Let's see how this unfolds.

Horse Sense

Mornings, I look out my window,
Searching for Priscilla,
The calico, lounge-bound, stray cat
Who curled up, slept, and purred
On orange, vinyl cushions,
Never hunting
A day in her long life.
For the time of day,
I study the sun,
And the hawks,
Even though
It's not their season.
I imagine the herd’s coat colors --
Blood bay, black, grey,
Chestnut, buckskin, roan,
And I remember the warning --
A wild, white ring
Around the eye
Of one appaloosa.
I listen for the blacksmith,
the vet, the hay man,
the tractor noise,
And I worry about
Pitchforks, shovels, buckets, pipes,
And the tumultuous weather,
Because sometimes,
Back in the day,
Lightning spooked the mare.
Sometimes I wonder about
Heaven --
If it lives and breathes
Within one ear,
One tail,
One hoof,
One gravel driveway,
Or maybe inside
The darkest aisle.
I still listen for the call
Of my dapple bay horse.
His eyes were like dark saucers.
There were the others,
And then there was him.
When I was sixteen,
He was simply,
God.
I guess
I know these panes.
I guess I know that he was.

The Pattern, Little Clicks

An exercise in the "anti-pattern;" that is, against RHW Dillard's chicken theory, but if he were next to me, I'm sure he'd be laughing and saying this:  'An anti-pattern is also a pattern...and so, it circles back and embraces the chicken.' Ha! If you know, you know. And if you do, I'm sorry your brain must hurt like hell.

Little Clicks

Ice Cream, dancing, old tapes, reflection, turn
closer, facing, pacing, say thank you, surprise,
tell the truth or I will die, wake up, exit the planet,
lightning, free times, inside, rush, allow yourself
to be where you are, off the street, nine times
outta ten, lord, mouth, tragic, action, major,
return, little clicks, house, church, Jimmy,
rooms, milk, fancy, tamable, all in, spiraling
self-criticism, nothing’s forever, core, bullet
hole, cocaine, empty, strange, no fathers, trapped,
guitar, pack, rock star, lean in and trust, walk
through it, recognize it, I’ll be found out, nobody’s

Show Up

This morning, I'm feeling rather connected...yesterday, I wrote about a mountain of fear. I shared some of it with a group. I shared the rest with a spiritual friend. Sometimes, it helps me to do both, when it's heavy territory, ha. Deep stuff! As we grow older, it just gets deeper! Also, I spent some time in a few of my secret spots, places where I feel calm and heard. I have several right now...they change from time to time.

I used to think fear was a bad thing. I used to think all feelings were bad, that I had to get rid of them. Now it helps me if I can see fear as a mere tool, as information, as a way to bring me back closer to my heart...just more information. Takes a lot of the pressure off.

Anyway, right now, I'm reminded of this:  all I have to do is show up.

And I'm reminded of my answer to the question, "Chris, what do you want to be when you grow up?" My original answer:  "I want to be a wild horse!" 

Love to you...friends, fellow dreamers, and all of the black sheep and so-called weirdos, because we're all important, and we're all in this together, and most of those weirdos are simply geniuses in disguise.

Who I Am.

 Good morning.

Be who I am.

See who draws close and doesn't try to "fix" me, because I am OK and loveable, just how I am. I'm learning this more and more every day. I fall into old tapes or old reactions, but I suppose this is a long journey -- one back into the child within. :)XO.

Children, animals, they teach us all.

Clock In

So, clean the red buckets
or don't scrub a thing.
Maybe ride the finest
gelding; that boy's 100-K
at least. Fix what's black,
make it white-smooth,
or watch someone greater
get the leg up, becoming
the cowboy you’ll never
see again. Teach the kids
how to win, that blood
and bruises and blisters
are temporary. Always.

Or head down the drive
and lose every single child
at once. The tortoise cat lives
or dies. Down at the gate,
Mac the dog smiles, almost
forever. Soon comes the pack,
barking, catching up, seeking
out game scents, trusting
the air for signs, whether
danger or play. Above all,
when the scene chokes up,
grip the wheel, moving
with the wind and rocks.

And when the road runs
out, breaking the back
of work, you suddenly
realize that no one ever
came close, that no one
ever knew your twisted
insides, but like live gods,
now that you’re gone,
maybe they’ll whisper
your name, seeing traces –
a handprint in the dust,
a boot track in the lounge,
all loose boards nailed
tight, the rules and lesson
times that were forgotten,
and suddenly, they too
will live, buried within
you, wherever you go,
long after you clock out.
So, walk in silence
or hammer something.

Fear vs. Love

Good morning. When I am angry or uncomfortable, fear is usually present underneath it. I see fear everywhere...inside me and around me. Fear of money (I see it in myself, those who have, and those who don't have), fear of not being successful (I see it in those who are working in all sorts of varying positions), fear of being alone (I see it in those who have no families or partners and those who have large families and partners), fear of not being heard (I see it in the world around me, on the net, etc), fear of illness (I see it in the sick and in those who are well).

It seems like everyone I talk to shares these basic, human fears. I suppose the list would change and become unique for each individual, but there seems to be a common thread.

What is this fear teaching me?

Sometimes, maybe more often than not, I am...and the world is...addicted to fear.

What can I do today that's different, not fear-based?

I can love. Small gestures, help, focus on giving. Simply notice how I can be of service. I will try if you will. :)XO. Days like that, when I'm in the flow of all that's good, I feel no fear.
