In 2005, MacConnell won first prize in The Mercantile Library Short Story Contest. To date, her work has appeared in many anthologies, magazines, novels, and literary journals, such as Analecta:  University of Texas at Austin, Cincinnati Magazine, The Chronicle of the Horse, Cincinnati CityBeat, CiNWeekly, Streetvibes, Article 25, The Album Literary Magazine, Cargoes Literary Magazine, and the book, From Here to There:  Stories of Mobile Virginians. Mainly, she contributed to two sections of the publication -- "CityBeat Music" (interviews and profiles) and "Living Out Loud" (creative nonfiction). She also wrote news, arts, and film pieces. In 2010 and 2011, for her CityBeat music writing, she won the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists Award"Best Rock and Roll Feature Writing."

Over the years, her raw, brave advocacy writing has created national public interest and attention. MacConnell was invited to speak in front of House Representatives and later traveled wide to read and give talks at convention centers, universities, non-profit organizations, fire and police stations, and more. Soon after, she appeared on national television for a feature news story and met with several area journalists, and in 2009, she was interviewed locally as the "Spotlight Woman of the Year."
